Theoretically, the hot carbon is igniting the fuel mixture before the
distributor even is in the right position to fire. So, the timing
SHOULD not be an issue.

I think the wrong plugs, even if relatively new, can cause the
dieseling. David, the ATF slowly poured into the carb as the engine is
running will remove a lot of carbon.  I use a different liquid, no
longer available, but a number of people have told me the ATF works
well. And you cant hurt anything with it.
