Darrel's guess, after he bought it, was the same. He said that if it is a
354, it alone is worth his purchase price. I don't think he intends to part
the truck out, but it is in such nice shape that it would be a wonderful
candidate for restoration. It came from IH with a 345 per the lineset.
I'm told Perkins diesels have the reputation of being very economical to
operate. Maybe Mr. Stricker will weigh in with his opinion of Perkins
motors. Weren't they used on a lot of combines (M-F, A-C ), and Oliver
tractors back in the day? This one is a Caterpillar yellow like it came from
a piece of construction equipment or stationary pump. The mechanic that did
the work was somehow connected to a gravel company. Mike B understands that
part of the story better than me since it is close to where he lives.

I suspect the 354 made it into a *lot* of applications, given the power rating and relatively light weight. There are a bunch of them in stationary applications out here in CA(ag pumps and generators), although CARB probably has them targeted for replacement in their quest against 'old school' diesels of all makes.
