Rik,

This is appearance of having a scanned picture come out "huge" is quite
normal.  The greater the resolution you ask of the scanner, the larger the
picture will come out.  The trick is in what you do *after* scanning the
picture.

If you have enough memory in the PC and time to sit and let the picture scan,
the higher the scan resolution, the better.  Once you have the picture scanned
into your software, you need to *resize* it right then and there to the
desired size.  Personally I like a shareware program called Paint Shop Pro
http://cws.internet.com/redir/http://www2.jasc.com/psp501ev.exe which allows
you to do just about any conceivable graphic manipulation you could possibly
thing of.
