Trip Report of the Scout run.
On Friday night (around midnight as I was awaiting the arrival of Ben &
John Boring) I drove to the hotel and met up with the Scout drivers,
Joe, Dan & Dennis. We talked a bit & i decided to run with them the
next day.
For the Saturday wheeling I jumped into Joe's Scout for the day as a
guide. We cruised around to turtle with 3 scouts and 1 Brand new TJ in
tow. We crawled up Turtle and just before we reached the rock area ran
into a traffic jam. We envountered 6 heavily loaded quad runners on
their way down. well. we moved off to one side and let them pass and
finally go to the rock crawling. I guided through the first scout with
no problems. The Second one had a bit of a problem (it was a Scout III..
adn therefore longer) and slipped off a rock & sheared off the head of 1
u bolt. The third scout seemed to get through ok. but we would later
find out differently. The Tj driver decided that he was not ready to
risk his jeep so he turned back and went to the other groups. Whilke we
were traversing the rocks a Dodge Ramcharger drove in towards us form
the far side of the rocks. No. it was not the long lost Matt, but rather
a truck full of local fire & rescue guys out having some fun. They had
a copy of the map printed off the server. I think this illustrates a
little problem wiht puttimg such a map on the net.. They were using it
to navigate the park.. but they entered from a 'closed' enterance.
Well.. we drove down into the strip mines but decided not to test the
strength of the ice in the mud pit. A quick run down the mines and out
the far end .. thne down into the pit next to rubicon lake.. The Scouts
ran out the far end but the Ram chose to go around. We all ran the cut
down to the lake and found it frozen and much deeper than before.
I did a foot recon to lil rubicon saw it was totally frozen. The scouts
decided it was time to get back to the other group so I took them to the
top if Icky hill. All three ran the first 2 segments of it.. but the
third looked VERY steep and filled with loose rocks. The RAM bagged and
ran back to the strip mines. Joe decided to run the last bit of Icky
(also known as Halfway Hill) and just as we nosed over the edge to take
a look. His carb went dry due to the angle and the motor stalled..
Well.. no place to go but down.. so down we went with only Sir Issac
Newton in the driver's seat. Joe had to wrestle with the now
non-powered steering & brakes but we did make it thru intact. This is an
extremely steep section and you have to run it in a narrow path. (but
the other scouts took the bypass. Well at the bottom of halfway we ran
into all the rest of the OCC'rs. That was enough for the scouts so I
picked up my F150 and drove em to the gate. The next day they
discovered the 3rd scout had a punctured gas tank from turtle so they
hightailed it home... only to snap an axle at 50mph on I81 just 2 miles
down the road. All is wel.. thye were ok & got a flatbed to tow it back
home.
Next time the scouts want to try some of the hard stuff..
