One other purpose of all these fittings, or at least some of them, is they
let trapped air out of the gastank.  This comes into play when you fill you
tank on a nice cool morning, then drive a short distance and park with the
drivers side slightly lower than the passengers side.  Around noon, when the
air starts to warm up, it expands.  Without the vents on the passengers
side, the expanding air will force gas out of the filler neck, down the side
of the truck and leave a nice BIG pool of gas on the ground.  Now add a
careless smoker walking thru the parking lot, and you can do the math.
Sound like words of experience (except for the careless smoker part)?   Yep.
