Tony,
   My first responce is replace u-joint. Do it again since you didn't
personally see it done by previous owner. It is cheap insurance.
   Drive line play like you describe is curious. Do you have a Trak-Lok
in your rear diff? You may be able to turn the shaft a small amount with
that because of the clutches, but the clutches would also spring the
driveshaft back. Again, drop the diif cover. I just use silicon as a
gasket. Again, it is cheap insurance to look and see what is inside.
