There was some discussion about engine dowels a while back. 
   While reading Carroll Smith's fastener book he states that bolts only
job is to clamp, dowels are to locate. Therefore the dowel pines should
be kept and used whenever needed. Bolts should not be used to locate
things just to clamp them.
