TF727

Don't think so, according to the tables....

Yes, but drag racing is a one shot thing... I wasn't at all worried about
something just breaking in it due to pure rig weight but letting it get too
hot or dirty fluid or something. You know, less than perfect maintenance
multipled by many hot towing miles.

That's more reassuring <g>.
Actually, it does work pretty darn excellent. An earlier post about towing
with a Traveler mentioned replacing the 727, and Howard said why? Although
I'm still a select-it-yourselfer (and don't like to see all that engine
power dissipated as heat and dumped in front of my radiator), the auto does
seem to have some strong things going for it in towing... enough to make up
for one less gear, anyway.
At a dead start, you get all that smooth torque multiplication... (I think
this is why some rock-crawlers like autos?) Then the other thing you get is
a very quick 2-3 upshift, much quicker than I can get on a T18 family
tranny. This makes a big difference climbing hills. You can lose a lot of
MPH/RPMs just going from third to fourth...shift too soon or too slow, and
you have to go back to third. The 727 just goes "click" and it's done.
I think I just have some adjustment stuff- you have to jiggle it to make
sure it's in Park, also. I'll try to get the more accurate manual (what is
a 409, anyway?) and run through it. According to the service manual, it's
due for fluid, filter and band adjustment, so I'll be going over the whole
thing. But there isn't any indication that it's going to do an "Ugly," for
sure.
I just hate to get passed on hills.
