Scott,
   On one hand, if you onl drove on the street in S Cal with your Scout
I wouldn't worry about it, however; you don't live in S Cal anymore and
the weather will be more challenging on your vehicle not to mention the
temptation to drive off road now. So, I would look to get a replacement
axle. There are fairly easy to come by. Hopefully the one he nicked is
also the one you put the inferior bearings on and you will have to
replace it anyway.
