Let me add and clarify something I said on this earlier. I said the
Jacobs controls the output of the coil. That is technically correct,
but; there are also two types of coils. 
   I'll dig out my DR. Jacobs book tommorow, but; basically, the normal
coil only will put out what it is capable of. (Dependant on the voltage
in the primary circuit) This is proven by the fact that the points
circuit require either a resister or a resistance wire to limit the
voltage to 5 V during the run cycle. However, when you want to start the
car there is a bypass wire direct from the starter to supply 12V to the
coil to produce a hotter spark to help on cold starts and just to start
the first crank. Thus, the voltage in the primary circuit do effect the
output of the secondary.
   The other type of coil is an adjustable or variable coil. This coil
makes use of a computer to tell it what voltage to put out. This is
again accomplished by the voltage in the primary circuit, but; rather
than just 5V and 12V the computer varies these voltages to any number
from I guess 5V to 14.4V or whatever it can draw from the battery. Now
my Jacobs computer has a "buffer" that stores energy for use by the coil
on demand. What I think this is, is a large capasitor that stores energy
just like a battery, but; it stores it in series so it can output more
than 14V. Maybe up to 48V. Now you say, where doo I get that Voltage?
Well, figure a typical stock coil outputs 20,000V at start up from 12V.
That makes the coil a 1667 to 1 transformer. Thus, 1667 to 1 times say
48 volts equals 80,000V. The rated output of my Jacobs coil. So, the
Jacobs would build voltage in the 'buffer' to 48V or higher and release
what it felt each cylinder needed at that particular spark.
   I will find that Jacobs book and expound on this farther tommorrow.
