Glasspack Mufflers

Ok.. just asking for some subjective comments.. 

I removed the old (shot) muffler from my '77 last week because it was
rubbing my rear driveshaft.

I replaced it with a 2.25" x 25" Thrush glasspack muffler..

LOUD.  Particularly when I get up in the RPM range (which, with a 196, I do
a lot).. kinda fun, but I somehow don't feel good about it.. promoting that
ugly vision of 4-wheelers and all that..

I bought the glasspack because it is NARROW.. doesn't rub, less to get
caught up on rocks, etc.. and cheap.

Just wondering if things would quiet down at all with a 30" muffler.. or do
I want to find a "regular" muffler, and can I find one that's narrower than
the "typical" muffler?

I know I could probalby squeeze whatever I want up there just by making sure
all the exhaust hangers are in the right spot, etc..
