Paul,

No trick.  but they are held on by making the splines bind through the 
spring action of the arm.  i.e. the pressure to keep the wiper on the 
glass also causes the splines to bind so the arm doesn't come off.

You have to lift the arm and then rock the cap a bit to ease the binding 
and then it should just come off.
