Re: Wandering Scouts.

Just a point to keep in mind when thinking about buying tires and/or
fighting with a wander problem--probably the biggest factor is bias ply
tires. There have been a number of cases where people have complained to
me about their Scout "suddenly starting to wander." Usually this has
happened in October and November just after they have replaced radial
street tires with bias ply snow tires and generally after I have pointed
this out, they will report back in the spring that all is OK again.

I have run big bias ply off-road tires in the past and you can make sure
the steering system is good and even increase the caster, but they're
still going to try to climb every irregularity in the road, etc. I know
some people don't like radials for off road use, but just remember
there's a price to pay. I personally won't run anything but radials,
even if I have to go back to the original sized tires, and I don't agree
with the statement that "all Scouts wander."

Another factor is the small steering wheels. On an older Scout with
10.00x15 bias plies, I removed my 15" wheel and put the original 17" back
on getting ready to sell it and was surprised at how much more control I
had (and this was with power steering). I still run a small wheel
however.

About all I can say is:You pays your money and takes your choice!
