Hi Dan,
When I did my ball joints the recommendation was to use a raw hide
hammer. What I ended up doing was to spray a rust remover like WD-40 on.
I then wrapped the spindle with a rag and used a hammer to tap the
spindle loose.I only tapped on the non-threaded part of the spindle so it
took a while.I tapped on side then 180deg. away,moved 90deg. then tapped
and then 180deg.This is not a fast way but it works. After you get the
spindle out some you may want to take an old screwdriver and pry the
spindle off. I cleaned off the rust on both the spindle and up-rite,and
gave both a light coat of wheel bearing grease on re-assembly.
Take your time!
