Resistor
The resistor is only there to lengthen the life of the points
under normal use. In fact, a starter on a points-equipped
vehicle has a resistor terminal that cuts out the resistor to
get a better spark for starting.
The MSD ignition drastically reduces the voltage at the
points, so the resistor is unnecessary.
