Look for a record in the archives from me about oiling this cheesy
little motor instead of doling out $400.
Summary of procedure, based upon my work on my '85 528e (I spent over
$300 to replace mine many years ago, before I tried this, and it
worked, when the replacement failed):
Remove upper firewall cover to expose the little dual sqirrel-cage fan
assembly centered between the wipers.
Remove the plastic cover by pressing on things until they unlatch,
carefully noting how things must be aligned to go back together.
Using an oil can with a flexible spout, dump some 3-in-1 or similar
lubricant into each Oilite bearing of the motor. Do this a few times.
Wait a little while. Try the fan. If it's not quiet, squirt some
more.
Once it's quiet, reassemble and drive until you need to repeat this
procedure. Probably once a year or so, so you might want to do it
when the weather is nice.
Spend the $400 on a case of fine single-malt scotch, and toast me.
All the best,
Larry Swain
