E34 Manual shift position?

I have a couple of E34s with the 1.8 engine.
On one (222K miles) the manual shifter is positioned such that with the
ashtray open to use the power socket my knuckles
hit the tray.

The other one ( only 125K miles) is further back
and so there is a clearance????
It also seems a little more positive.

Is there some simple bushings in the top joints
that may be worn allowing more movement?
If so it is easy to replace?
