Hi Ron, I have a 1986 535i and it has the ABS but mine does not work either. 
There are sensors on each of the wheels but the ABS pump and relays are 
under the hood just behind the passenger side headlight.  When I checked 
under the small black cover over the pump, there are I believe two relays. I 
found that one had been removed for whatever reason but was able to locate 
it in the glove box (from the former owner). When I replaced the relay, I 
found that the brakes worked normal but I didn't get a chance to test the 
ABS as I had experienced some odd things i.e. No signal lights, wipers, 
radio to name a few.  I removed the relay everything returned to normal 
except the ABS.  I put this project on hold as I had some other important 
issues to attend to on this vehicle.  I hope this helped and maybe I can get 
this issue cleared up by reading other responders.  Good luck.  Gil

Hi All,

from watching the list earlier on, and noticing a few posts regarding E28's
with abs, and issues with sensors, I thought I might have ABS on my car, and
didn't think much more of it.  Then tonight, when I had to stop abruptly, 
the
tires completely locked up, and got me thinking I don't, or its not working.
Can someone tell me if an 85 535i would have ABS standard?  When I put on my
new calipers rotors and pads 2 months ago, I didn't notice any ABS gear..

Any info would help
