BTDT. 
The root cause was not replacing the little POS cramp-clamp that was 
holding the narrow return hose to the overflow tank. I had wiggled it 
loose replacing the plastic impeller water pump a week or two prior to the 
accident. 
Note to everyone one the list: buy at least a dozen 1/2" clamps to keep on 
hand and replace the disposable clamps as you work on the cooling and fuel 
lines. 
Buy two 1" clamps to replace the perennially leaking power steering hose 
clamps. Basically, replace each and every disposable clamp you see on your 
car. Sooner or later it will loosen up or let go.
The only collateral damage, beyond a broken fan blade and cut hose, were 
bent rear lower control arms (wish bones) from the tow straps. New arms 
($65/each with bushings), alignment ($80) and four tow hooks ($24) later 
the car is better than it was before the incident.

Edwin,
So how did you mange to inflict $9K worth of engine bay damage? I though 
used E36 M3 engines were going for around $4K tops!
