<E28> Removal of shifter knob a pain.. Help

Hello All,

I am trying to remove my shifter knob on my 85 535i and replace it, since it
is worn out and the leather is starting to decay.  I removed the top disk that
was affixed using some sort of sticky material, and found the philips screw,
Removed the screw, and tried to pull up on the knob to remove it from the
lever, and it moved about 1/8th of an inch, and then wouldnt move at all.  Is
there anything that I am missing?
