<E34> '90 535i starting problem

Hi - symptoms:
    . charged battery
    . normal lights when in ign sw pos 2
    . attempt to start and *nothing* happens. no solenoid click, nada.
    . sometimes happens several times (lots) in a row,  let it sit and 
it'll start l8r
    . sometimes will start the 2nd or 3rd or 4th (well you get the idea) try

I'm at work, away from Bentley...anyone got quick advice?
