E28 535 Engine Removal

Hi all,
         I am thinking about pulling the engine out of my 85 535i to
have some work done. The Bentley manual says that the transmission has
to be removed first but I thought that I have heard from BMW Digesters
over the years that it is possible to lift the engine out with the
tranny still attached. I would appreciate any tips or advice from anyone
who has any experience with removing an M30 from an E28.
