E36 rough idle when cold

I have a 1992 E36 with the M50 engine and 75,000 miles and it has recently begun to idle roughly when it is cold.  Once it warms up it is fine.  On my old 320i I would suspect the cold start valve.  Has anyone had a similar problem or an idea of what the problem could be?  Where should I start looking?
