EML Light - 750iL

A friend had to jump start his 1989 750iL, and now the EML light is on, and 
the car is running poorly.  (I didn't see it in person - he told me about 
this on the phone).

Anyhow, what simple things can be done to see if this is a minor problem, or 
to verify whether he did fry the throttle computer ($1000!)?

Is there anyone on the list with a 750/850 who has experienced this?  Let me 
know the outcome.
