I've been through this with my son's E30 ('86 325es)....the best suggestion 
for the buck I can offer is to go with the Eibach Pro-Kit springs and 
Bilstein Sports (NOT Heavy Duty!!!).  You won't believe how tight yet smooth 
the car rides...expect a lowering of about an inch to 1-1/4 inch.
