1988 528e heater repair

The smell of burning antifreeze envelopes my interior.  Tried tightening
the clamps around the hoses leading into the interior and smell
prevails, so  am guessing there's a leak in my heater unit.  What are
some economical ways to fix?   Saw recent thread on by a DYI'er and it
sounds beyond my ken/patience.
 
Any suggestions on how to save bucks/aggravation in doing it yourself,
please advise.
