As several people have recently stated, the brake lining wear sensor is
essentially a 'wire' loop that completes a circuit. When the wire breaks
(if the pads have worn down far enough for the sensor to make contact with
the rotor, or if the wire is damaged), the circuit will be broken, and the
brake lining light will turn on.
So, when you replace your wear sensor(s), do this: rather than discard them,
cut off the sensor portion, leaving a short length of wire from the
connector, and solder the two wires together, forming a wire loop. You can
now use this for testing the brake wear sensor circuits in the future.
Also, if you track your car and swap brake pads for the track, you can
remove your wear sensors (leave them attached to the inboard pads), and
replace them with these test loops, to keep the brake lining light
extinguished during your track sessions.
