Locking Diff

I have discovered that my recently acquired 1990 4-door 5-speed E30 325i has
a locking diff ( presumably the same thing as a Limited Slip Diff)
Was this standard on these cars or is it a performance enhancement in which
case were other things likely added as a "sports package"?
I am very impressed at the performance of this car, having driven M3's of
similar vintage on the track, I find little difference in performance and
only minimal in handling.
