It is called a "microfilter" and it is not all that difficult to replace. I
have owned my M3 all of 3 months and I did it myself in about 20 minutes.
The filter aint cheap at about $30, and the technique for installation can
be found at http://www.koalamotorsport.com/tech/e36.microfilter.htm this is
the version that does not require removal of the blasted glove box which is
the PITA part.

You may also want to change the "pollen" filter, too. I never changed it
myself, but I've had the dealer install a new one. Supposed to be a real
PITA
to change, though. I forget the technical name for it, but I believe it is
one of the recommended items in an Inspection II.
