re: WD40 flammability
When Freons were discontinued due to their ozone problem, WD40 for a while
used butane as a propellant. So activating a switch with propellant vapors
present could cause ignition.
WD40 changed the design of the can recently to allow the use of
non-flammable CO2 as a propellant. The CO2-propelled cans have a larger
nozzle than the old can.
Petroleum oils (like WD) are still the standard dressing for sliding
contact switches; ignition is a non-issue. Silicones perform poorly.
See the Nye Lubricants site for much information on contact lubricants.
