E34 Radio Static

When I turn the volume knob on my stock radio (1989 535i - E34), I get a lot
of static over the speakers.  I remember my dad using some tuner cleaning
spray years ago, but that goes back to the days of tubes.  Is there a way I
get rid of the static?
