Tree Sap

I have my 96 328i, green, parked in my driveway under a sycamore tree.
When I went to wash it today, I found the hood covered in pin-sized dark
drops which I suspect are hardened tree sap.

Washing the car did not get rid of them. Attacking them with a
cleaner/wax reduced them somewhat in size but also succeeded in smearing
them around. I even went at them with 3M bug and tar remover. Reduced them
somewhat, but the hood still looks like crap and they are still very
noticeable.

Any recommendations (short of taking it to a detailer) for products that
will remove the sap but not hurt the paint???

    Many thanks,
    Seeker

P.s. Sorry if this appears twice in the Digest. When I first tried to post
it, I received a - "Warning: message 15XtiZ-0004Uf-00 delayed 24 hours" and
so am sending the post a second time.
