Down, at least on my e-36 (1995 318i), and nearly that long.

I replaced a window regu;ator yesterday, and when I first let it go up
on auto, it went all the way up, then reversed down about 40-50mm.
I took it down and once fully down, held the switch for 1-2 seconds.
Reset!
