I am a long time BMWCCA member and driven mostly M Cars. I have religiously
changed drivetrain fluids and used Redline products.
Now I have added a 1998 528iA with approx. 41000 miles on the odometer to the
family. There is no requirement to change the drivetrain fluids per the
service manual. I have read in a recent Roundel that although it is always
recommended to change fluids regularly, there have been adverse impacts to
the BMW transmissions when the fluids have been changed. Advice...if it
ain't broke, don't fix it.
Asked my local dealer and they say I will need to take it to a transmission
shop with special equipment so they can suck all the transmission fluid out
of the transfer case. A regular draining won't get all the old fluid out.
Not really thrilled with taking the car to AAMCO to have this done.
What do you recommend? The car has the extended warranty but I am hesitant
to do anything here with the negative stories floating around on what could
happen after the fluid is changed. Will the fluid change give me any
longevity?
Thanks...Chris Osborne
