V8 Nikasil Issue

I have a 1994 740il purchased in July 98.  Just learned about the V8 
deterioraton problem with the nickasil engine blocks mfg. from 93 to 95.  
Interested in understanding when BMW determined that the engine block should 
be replaced and what statistics if any, exist to determine percent of 
engines that fail.

My 740il has 70k miles and my independent service company described that the 
idle was rough and I should have it checked by the dealer.  I purchased this 
from a BMW dealer and until I went to an independent, no one at the 
dealership mentioned a word about this evidently well known nickasil V8 
problem.
