There was a problem with the toothed cam pulley collapsing on some M20
motors.
If the toothed Pulley wheel didn't keep its shape, the belt would migrate
forward.
If the idler toothed wheel (drive for the oil pump {also drives
distributor on euro= non-Motronic motors}) was miss-alligned, or loose on
its spindle, it could miss-allign the belt.
Or you could have a "bad belt". Hope for a bad belt, but change the
tensioner also.
