To gain access to all the pan's screws you do have to remove the steering
rack and lift the engine somewhat, which requires you to loosen the engine
mounts. The bell housing of the transmission has torx head bolts as well as
hex head bolts. I was expecting to find sludge at the bottom of that 13 year
old pan, but it was as clean as a whistle down there.
There are good articles on steering rack removal on the E30 net. Getting the
steering knuckle off and on is a challenge. I also repaired and replaced the
power steering hoses with the banjo bolts while I was in there.
