a/c conversion to r134a

i want to convert my 86 535 to r134a but am getting conflicting information on
how to do it.  some sources say you have to replace the compressor, others say
the existing Bosch R12 compressor will work as long as the dryer is changed
out and system completely cleaned and flushed with special equipment.

i just have a leaking hose, second one in two years, and am debating the costs
involved.  live in texas, so i need the coldest alternative...
