Questions about e39, specifically 540i 6-speed...

We are currently in the market for a new car, and the possibles list is
topped by the 540i 6-speed right now. I'd like to solicit opinions on
the overall reliability of this car, and how it compares year to year.
For instance, are the model year 1997 and 1998 cars any different?
Should I stay away from the 1997, or even the 1998? What are the biggest
problems owners have experienced so far?

Also, has anyone had good/bad experience with EBMWUSA and California
Bimmers?
