Neil,
Check for leakage at the seams where the side tanks attach to the radiator
core. My car (1993 525iT) had leaks here, and would occasionally drip
coolant on the floor.
The E34 has an aluminum radiator core and plastic tanks. The solution for
this leaking problem is a replacement radiator.
