E34 noise

I'm hearing a very strange noise from the rear of my '95 E34 wagon. I've
noticed that over the last several days when starting my car on particularly
cold mornings (0 Farenheit lately) I hear a strange moaning/grinding sound
emanating from somewhere toward the rear of the car. Initially, it would
seem to go away shortly after the car warmed up but tonight the noise
remained audible for thirty minutes or so.

Any suggestions?
