RE: 535i with weird clutch

Bil,

You are describing the same problem I had with my 87 535is.
At that time the master and slave cylinder were only 6 months old
and didn't even suspect them. I first thought it was a binding
slave cylinder - it wasn't. Then I completely disassembled the
master cylinder (twice), because the system would refuse to bleed normally.
The problem really came when I was out at the track running 9/10th. It is
a bit inconvenient to have the clutch stick when you are looking for that
next shift.

It turns out that the clutch master cylinder was bad. Spent the $60 at the
dealer and things are all well. I still cannot figure out why the
original master cylinder was bad.

Note: I was just about ready to rip the transmission out to check the
release
bearing. Glad I didn't do that.

Hope this helps and let me know.

The clutch and pedal on my '85 535i are doing something very odd. When the
car is cold (yes,
it goes away after warmup) the clutch pedal wants to stay at, or close to,
the floor. I have
to pull the pedal back up with the top of my foot. As an added measure of
weirdness, sometimes
when it sticks close to the floor, I become unable to floor the pedal and
take it out of gear,
and the car even begins to creep forward (as though the pedal had been
released) with the
pedal fully depressed. I then have to put my toes UNDER the pedal, pull it
fully out, and THEN
depress it to get the gear released. What is broken here? Anyone?

TIA- Bil
