I had a similar occurance on my 85 535i. As it turns out there was a problem
with enough current making it to the relay to trigger it. I replaced the
relay and I thought it fixed it. I ended up putting the old relay back on and
if I ever needed to I could manually trigger the relay, once it was closed it
was fine. You might want to consider making a jumer wire from two male flat
blade crimp connectors and some 12 gauge wire, throw it in the glove
compartment. Its manual but it will defintly allow the car to start if you
have more relay trouble.
I ended up selling the car before the problem manifested itself again. I
never really found out what it was, would guess a bad ignition switch is it
feeds power to the main relay.
Good luck

Thanks to the list my BMW is now starting and running
reliabily. It turns out the Main relay was the cause.
The relay would "click" (i.e. getting power) but the
circuit remained open. Upon inspection of the old
relay you could see that the contacts were well pitted
and worn. This weekend I will be replacing the rest
of the relay family as so many of you suggested. And
for fun, I replaced all the fuses, changed the fuel
filter and inspected the ECU as well.
