Borrow a handheld GPS.  Now that SA* has been turned off, you should be able
to check your speedo to within .1 mph - or whatever the resolution of the
GPS's display.  Mine (a cheapie Magellan 315) updates quickly enough to be
useful during acceleration.

*SA == Selective Availability, intentional dithering that the US military
(who owns the GPS constellation) included with the GPS signal to reduce its
accuracy.  The purpose was so that incoming ICBMs couldn't use GPS to hit
your doorknob, instead they could only be assured of landing somewhere on
your block.
