E36 power window only moves step by step

Hi,
I have an E36 325 TD (1992) which has a strange problem concerning the
driver-side power window. The thing is, when I open the window, it only
lowers a few inches and then it stops. I then have to push the power button
again for it to move another few inches. Closing the window requires the
same procedure. Does this sound familiar to anyone ? If so, some help would
greatly be appreciated.
