alternator/voltage regulator question

My '92 535i 5 speed w/80k, has had a slight miss/hesitation when 
accelerating and after replacing, adjusting & cleaning everything, I took it 
to the dealer. The tech. told me that everything checked out except for the 
alternator. It is putting out 14.5 voltages, which he said is causing the 
problem & that the voltage regulator needs to be replaced. He said that the 
ECM would be getting the wrong voltage and would cause strange things. Can 
anyone comment on this & has anyone replaced one. Any special problems? The 
Bentley shows that it's fairly straightforward
