vent control 1984 733i

Help! I've found a deal on a 1984 733i, but one problem confuses me. No matter which position the vents are in (A/C, defrost, or heat) air only blows through the defrost vents. Is this controlled by vacuum and if so, which hose? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Private e-mails ok.
