E39 climate control

I have recently taken delivery of a new 530d. After covering 6000 miles, I
am very pleased with it, with the exception of the climate control. I find
that on a warm day when the interior temperature rises above 35/40 degrees
C, the climate control ramps the fan up to full speed to reduce the
temperature to the set point. However, it very rapidly turns it back down to
a very slow speed, while the interior temperature is still 10 or so degrees
above the setpoint. The only solution seems to be to adjust the fan speed
manually.

The car has just returned from the dealer today who tells me there is
nothing wrong and that this is how it should work!

Any suggestions would be greatly received.
