a/c compressor... gone south!

Hi guys, my mechanic here in Mexico just gave the bad news, my compressor
died!!
Any suggestions about replacements, where to get them, if it is better to
get a new one, if it is possible to rebuild... etc. Any clues are
appreciated ( I just asked for a new compressor from a bmw dealer in
Houston, tx. aprox. $800 + tax !! )

By the way, the car is a 1989 E30.
