E34 525i Stuck Air Flow Meter

My E34 525i (12 valve) has this periodic problem of a stuck AFM. When reving
to
high end, occasionally the AFM flap seems to get stuck and so not enough air
gets
into the combustion chamber which results in a loss in power and flat spots
in the
high rev range. My question is, is there any way to service or overhaul an
AFM unit
or do I need to purchase a totally new one?. Will spraying some WD-40 into
it make it 
better?. Any advice appreciated.
